(LOT 116)
Rare Circa 1910 Turkey Red Cigarette Advertising Display with Empty Clamshell Pack

The marriage between big tobacco and baseball thrived for more than 75 years as companies like Goodwin & Co., Allen & Ginter and Turkey Red produced baseball "tobacco" player cards to include in individual packs while players served as spokesmen for the industry. The offered is a circa-1910 Turkey Red wooden framed advertising display with an original cigarette pack included. This rare marketing piece shows striking red and pink hues of a woman holding a pack of Turkey Red cigarettes against a black background. The highly popular Turkey Red cabinet cards were available via mail-in exchange for ten coupons, included individually in packs of cigarettes. Restoration and in painting apparent at the lower right corner with minor wrinkles and border chipping; water mark at top left along white border; surface abrasions and border wear. Cherry-wood colored frame appears original, with "Turkey Red Cigarettes" inscribed in gold at the bottom showing expected age and wear. The framed piece measures 16" x 20" with the item itself measuring 14" x 18". Also included is an original, but empty, clamshell box of Turkey Red Cigarettes that measures 2" x 3" x 3/4". Excellent condition for the advertisement sign. The cigarette pack has the identical image on the cover, though the red color appears much richer and deeper. Box reveals heavy border wear under and around the image; minimal expected paper loss on front and back. Fair condition.
