(LOT 70)
1909 E95 Philadelphia Caramel Ty Cobb PSA 7 NM - Highest Graded Example!

The highly coveted Philadelphia Caramel Co. 25-card set issued in 1909 includes a myriad of Hall of Famers, with Tyrus Raymond Cobb paving the way as the set's most popular and valuable subject. Presented here just happens to be the highest graded E95 Cobb, reflecting a PSA near Mint 7 assessment that along with a meager 3 other examples stands as the irrefutable "best of the rest!" Any artifact of the incomparable Ty Cobb is actively pursued by any vintage enthusiast, let alone one that reigns supreme on the prestigious PSA "Pop" chart. Further substantiating the excruciating task of capturing an E95 Cobb featuring the near-impossible "7" assessment is the immense condition sensitivity of Philadelphia Caramel subjects that typically reveal serious surface issues. Simply stated, century+ old candy cards rarely surface with the hallowed near-mint grade, let alone one representing the immortal Ty Cobb for which PSA has encapsulated some 160 examples. The "Georgia Peach" is one of the five original 1936 HOF charter members, easily merited via his unequivocal records of 12 batting titles and baseball's highest lifetime average (.366). One of our National Pastime's greatest all-time players, the ultra-controversial and fiery Detroit outfielder had no peers as a "five-tool" pre-WW1 player, with this candy card treat one of Cobb's most miraculous cardboard gems.

This near-mint marvel portrays visual appeal seldom seen from any pre-WW1 card, and even more rewarding is the unique Ty Cobb portrait pose gracing the card. The ONLY cardboard issue depicting this obscure portrait pose, most Cobb "E" cards portray standard batting and fielding images utilized for the following issues: E90-1, E93, E95, E101, E102, E106, T206, T216, etc. The card itself pictures a magnificent portrait image of the iconic star, supported by a bold cranberry red background that is the foundation of this cornerstone heirloom. The well-centered illustration does reveal a slight "tilt" towards the upper right corner, with the strong square corners reflecting only marginal wear at their utmost tips. Pack fresh-like surfaces, blinding white borders, fine perimeter edging and a super clean 25-player checklist verso complete this spellbinding gem that has stubbornly defied 112 years of potential wear. It simply boggles the mind to imagine that a "candy" card subject could retain nearly all of its original factory issued attributes, and the fact that the subject is the iconic "Georgia Peach" certainly sweetens "the pot". Issued during the 3rd year of Cobb's miraculous run of nine consecutive batting titles, its "Top Pop" standing is ironically synonymous with Tyrus Cobb's pinnacle stature, undoubtedly meriting it a final resting place in any world-class compilation!
