(LOT 57)
1895 N300 Mayo's Cap Anson PSA 5 EX

You don't have to be a sophisticated collector to understand the significance of owing an Adrian "Cap" Anson 19th century issued baseball card. After his late 1880's Old Judge, Goodwin Champions and Allen & Ginter issues, it wasn't until 1895 when he re-appeared in a mainstream set, the extremely popular N300 Mayo's Cut Plug issue. In 1895, the Richmond, Va. Mayo Tobacco Works manufacturer issued what is the last major 19th century set. Forty different players are included in this issue with 48 different player poses including a mixture of "street clothes" and uniform variety. While extremely popular with 19th century enthusiasts, they are subject to ultra- condition sensitivity issues due to fragile original bold black borders frequently found with significant chipping. Presented here just happens to be Cap Anson's iconic Mayo's Cut Plug specimen residing in a superb PSA EX 5 holder, one of only 5 at this mid-grade plateau with a meager 2 examples graded higher! Adrian "Cap" Anson, is considered by many historians as the greatest 19th century "player" and the most coveted 1895 Mayo Plug baseball subject.

The Hall of Fame 1st baseman of the Chicago club was the first member of the illustrious 3,000 hit club, and ended a remarkable 27-year career with a .329 lifetime batting average. Anson's stoic black & white portrait bust also utilized on his Old Judge and Goodwin Champions subjects is near-immaculate, with his "CHICAGO" uniform and facial expression depicting the finest contrast and resolution you would expect from a 126-year old baseball card. The well centered image shows partial favoritism towards the left edge, and relatively clean black borders only portray some a few areas of negligible color loss along the edging, uncharacteristic for this issue that is typically plagued by unsightly border chipping. Completing this Anson marvel is an imposing bold black verso, with the superb eye appeal and strong technical assessment meriting this 19th century masterpiece the highest hobby accolades!
