1895 Newsboy Cabinets N566 Amos Rusie #170 SGC 5 EX – HIGHEST GRADED!
A year after THE New York Giants ACE Amos Rusie won the pitching Triple Crown, National Tobacco Works released the N566 Newsboy cabinet photo set characterizing more than 500 actors and actresses, politicians, celebrities and athletes, including 14 known examples of ballplayers. The offered is a rare portrait of New York's Amos Rusie one of two Hall of Famers available in the set along with John Ward, the latter of which can be found in two separate poses. A prime sample of this unique cabinet photo set, Rusie's likeness is fresh and clean as if right from the studio. And as this 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" sepia-toned photograph carries an SGC 5 EX grade, it is hard to imagine what kept this cabinet from achieving greater recognition. The image, stamped "175 – Amos Rusie" on his right breast, shows light foxing, but the reverse displays only a handful of surface marks. It is difficult to fathom why this highest-graded representation from either grading service failed to attain a more prominent grade equal to its visual appeal. Arguably Rusie's most valuable and desirable baseball card and infinitely more rare than either of the two Ward poses.
