(LOT 55)
1895 Newsboy Cabinets N566 John Ward Arms Folded #586 SGC 3 VG

John Montgomery Ward retired in 1894 as the first and only man in history to register more than 2,000 hits and amass 100 pitching wins. The following year, 1895, National Tobacco Works produced the popular N566 Newsboy Cabinet photo set, with than 500 Hollywood actors and actresses, politicians, athletes and other contemporary celebrities, not to mention ballplayers. Presented is an SGC 3 VG graded example of one of the two poses in the set check listed as "arms crossed" variety. So clear is this image that the veins on the physically fit pitcher/outfielder can be seen bulging from his forearms. This blazing 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" cabinet card shows little sign of aging with only miniscule flaking at the top. The back mirrors the creamy tones of the front with faint smudging as well as indistinct handwriting that was long ago removed. Considering the freshness of the photograph, it would seem that the minor toning and printing on the reverse is the only reason for a grade of an otherwise impressive cabinet premium.
