(LOT 137)
1924 Walter Johnson PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Charles Conlon Photo – Measures Approx. 5-1/4" x 7-1/4" - PSA Type I LOA

Fresh off of his first and only World Championship in 1924, Walter Johnson would once again lead his Senators to another A.L. Pennant in 1925, facing off against the Pirates in the 1925 Fall Classic. Unfortunately for both Washington and Johnson, this World Series would not turn out as favorable as the prior year's remarkable victory, with the Pirates besting Washington in a tightly contested 7-game battle. Only a year earlier, Walter Johnson entered game#7 in the ninth inning of a tie game, holding the N.Y. Giants scoreless for four innings until Washington pushed across the series clinching run in the bottom of the 12th to claim their first and only World Championship. This outstanding 1924 Charles Conlon PSA Type I stock photo is a fitting testament for that championship season, portraying an imposing Johnson portrait image as the Hall of Fame twirler dons his classic Washington Senators home uniform. The 1924 campaign would be the only year Washington's home uniforms were solid white (unquestionably dating this illustration to 1924), as opposed to the pinstripes the Senators would typically wear in every other season at their popular Griffith Stadium home ballpark.

Measuring approximately 5-1/4" x 7-1/4", the flipside caption (titled: SENATORS AGAIN WIN AMERICAN LEAGUE PENNANT) clearly states that Washington will be heading back to the Fall Classic against the Pittsburg Pirates with the hopes of repeating their 1924 World Series victory. Although the caption implies this is a 1925 image, it truly originated in 1924 as a Charles Conlon stock photo, re-issued in September 1925 with its current caption. Like most Conlon illustrations, this museum worthy marvel reveals the finest possible clarity and contrast, with its only notable flaws being manual trims to all four of the somewhat wavy edges. Simply stated, the "Big Train's" stoic pose is absolutely breathtaking as the fire-balling right-hander exhibits the facial intensity that clearly made him the "best of the rest." It is no secret that Walter Johnson is heralded as the greatest pitcher in baseball history, justified by his 417 victories, 3,508 strikeouts and incredible 110 shutouts of which 38 resulted in a 1-0 score. His classic PSA Type 1 illustrations are highly coveted, and we cannot imagine a finer world-class tandem than a Charles M. Conlon photo representing the immortal Walter Johnson who mowed down hitters at an alarming rate throughout his unparalleled 21-year career in our Nation's capital!
