Extremely Rare 1929/'30 Roger's Peet #31 Red Grange (PSA Good 2) – One of Only Two PSA Encapsulated Examples (both PSA 2's)
One of the scarcest c.1930 sports card issues is the multi-sport Rogers Peet black & white "blank backed" cards. Assumingly distributed in 1929 and 1930, these Roger's Peet rarities are the result of a promotional effort involving a New York/Boston chain of stores. Boys visiting stores with a parent were eligible to receive four cards to be placed in a 14-page album. The complete set incudes 48 subjects with a myriad of sports stars from baseball, hockey, track, golf, tennis, football, etc.
The set's most popular football subject just happens to be Hall of Famer Red Grange, with his PSA 2 scarcity presented here residing as one of only two PSA encapsulated copies (both PSA 2's) and sharing the spotlight as the finest of its kind! Before becoming an NFL superstar, the "Galloping Ghost", Grange's popular nickname, was a three-time All-American for the University of Illinois, with the star halfback leading his team to a 1923 National Championship. Drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1925, Grange ultimately became one of the most versatile players in NFL history. Grange could run, pass, punt and play the defensive backfield, with #77 leading the Bears to two consecutive NFL championships in 1932/'33.
His extensive list of accolades from both a collegiate and professional perspective include being named the best college player of all-time by ESPN in 2008, the greatest Big Ten icon by the Big Ten Network in 2011, a member of the 1920's all-decade team and being a charter member for BOTH the College and Pro-Football Halls of Fames! Impressive to say the least, Grange will forever stand as one of the NFL's greatest all-time players, yet unfortunately for hobbyists, period football cards bearing his image are near impossible to locate, with his 1933 Sports King subject the only other "playing days" mainstream option versus this ultra-obscure 1929/'30 Rogers Peet offering.
The classic black and white "punting" image is crystal clear, such to the point you can virtually feel the football having jumped off Grange's powerful foot. Fine centering modestly favoring the left edge, bright white borders, relatively square corners reflecting only negligible wear, only a few minor surface flaws including stray wrinkles as well as some faint abrasions and a clean blank back all combine to portray eye appeal far beyond the rather harsh technical assessment. Yet, as most collectors would attest to, the card's true "1 of 2" PSA rarity and outstanding aesthetics render the grade virtually irrelevant, with the incomparable paucity level of this Red Grange offering placing it as one of the most significant Grid-Iron cardboard subjects extant!
