1938 "Lou Gehrig Ponders Early Season Slump" Associated Press Type 1 Photo - Measures Approx. 7" x 9" - PSA Type I Encapsulation
Fresh off of his $39,000 per year contract, Lou Gehrig started the 1938 campaign in extremely slow fashion, gathering only a single double going into his April 26th game against the Philadelphia Athletics. Their April 26, 1938 game played at Shibe Park would see the Yankees best the Athletics by a 5-3 score, with Gehrig belting his second double (and only second hit) of the season while knocking in one of the Yankees five runs. Unquestionably, the "Iron Horse" was totally stressing out at that point of the season, with his batting average standing at a measly .076 after he stroked his second double of the season.
This rare 7" x 9" Associated Press Type 1 offering portrays Gehrig before that April 26th game holding his right hand to his temple, looking as if the "weight of the world" was resting on his broad shoulders. The aesthetically brilliant image, it shows little wear and is virtually dead-centered between four relatively clean white borders. The verso includes a "4/26/39" dated caption that discusses how Gehrig and his $39,000 salary has stared the season in a big-time slump. A magnificent keepsake, it captures a super-candid pose of the immortal "Iron Horse" less than a year removed from the ill-effects of his tragic ALS disease.
