1904 W600 Sporting Life Cabinet– Johnny Kling - Uniform "Type 3" (PSA Authentic)
Standout catcher Johnny Kling played 13 MLB seasons, most of them with the Chicago Cubs where he ably assisted them in winning two consecutive world championships in 1907 & 1908. Synonymous with his winning ways, his representation on this scarce "PSA Authentic" 1902 W600 Sporting Life Cabinet w/a Type 3 Mount likewise portrays championship caliber aesthetics. Measuring approximately 5" x 7-1/2", the W600 Sporting Life Photo-type Cabinets were issued from 1902 thru 1911 by the Sporting Life Weekly Newspaper in Philadelphia, PA. and are one of the most coveted oversized cards in the hobby.
While Kling may never be enshrined in Cooperstown, this ultra-scarce W600 offering will forever reside as one of his most desirable cardboard keepsakes. The sparkling central image Kling portrait pose reveals outstanding contrast and registration, with no obtrusive creasing and somewhat right-angled corners additional superb attributes. The "Authentic/Altered" assessment is solely due to a previous "(1902)" notation directly beneath the central frame being erased by our consignor. As is the case with some of the other W600's in this auction, the verso reveals glaring evidence of scrapbook removal including glue and paper remnants. Otherwise, this extreme scarcity reflects spectacular obverse side aesthetics, with the PSA grade certainly not indicative of its splendid eye pleasing qualities!
