(LOT 32)
1940 Babe Ruth Signed Academy of Sport Certificate - Measures Approx. 8-1/2" x 11" – PSA/DNA Authentication/Encapsulation

This awe-inspiring 1940 Academy of Sport certificate is boldly signed by none other than the immortal Babe Ruth, and is encapsulated by PSA/DNA for ironclad authenticity. Also scripted by Ruth's renowned business agent Christy Walsh and dated October 16, 1940, these certificates were presented to individuals who attended instructions at the Academy of Sport with the certificates stating: "ATTENDED INSTRUCTIONS AT THE Academy of Sport – NEW YORK WORLDS FAIR - and he is hereby commended for his interest in Sport and his intentions to practice the ideals of Sportsmanship and Clean Competition as exemplified by the Baseball and Football leaders who have instructed him." Another one of Christy Walsh's brilliant promotional schemes, Walsh utilized the unparalleled popularity of the 1939/'40 World's Fair held in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park Queens (same site as the 1964/'65 World's Fair) to further promote the incomparable George Herman Ruth.

Student's who attended classes in two or more sports clinics received these large format certificates that are larger and scarcer than the more commonly seen small Laurel cards issued to students who only attended a single class. The classic World's fair logo serves as an imposing backdrop to the bold black text, and other than a modest upper right corner chip and some standard toning, the certificate emulates outstanding aesthetics. The critical Babe Ruth black fountain pen signature has been graded a PSA "NM/MT 8", with the Christy Walsh script likewise receiving the same assessment. As an interesting "side-note", the World's Fair officially closed on October 27, 1940, with this October 16, 1940 offering most likely one of the final certificates issued to the fortunate attendees. An extremely significant Ruthian artifact, it exhibits the highly coveted 'Babe Ruth" autograph on a pivotal World's Fair document at a time when "The Babe" was utilizing his unparalleled popularity to promote what would become one of the most iconic global events of the 20th century! - PSA/DNA Authentication/Encapsulation
