(LOT 148)
1963 Fleer #5 Willie Mays PSA 10 GEM MINT

POP 2!!! One of the most remarkable Willie Mays vintage cards has to be this nearly unique PSA Gem Mint 10 1963 Fleer offering that along with only a single other specimen shares the ultimate bragging rights as the "best of the rest"! Indeed, of the 1,500+ PSA encapsulated 1963 Fleer Willie Mays subjects, only a meager 2 examples have managed to achieve sheer perfection. The 1963 season would see the Fleer Company "throw their hat" into the baseball card ring when they issued their extremely popular 66-player set with the top three most prestigious subjects being Roberto Clemente, Sandy Koufax and Willie Mays.

Elevating the Fleer cards to a desirable level are the their unique well focused images and radiant yellow diamond shaped logos that include a black player caricature near the lower left quadrant. This museum worthy masterpiece portrays a pristine pose of the all-time centerfielder depicting the finest possible clarity and contrast, as Mays leans on his majestic bat donning his classic boyish grin. The image is extremely well-centered (nearly 50/50) between four dazzling white borders, and the entire perimeter including four right-angled corners is blistering sharp. The final exclamation points are gleaming surfaces and a super clean verso that all substantiate the near-impossible "Gem Mint 10" assessment that synonymous with the 'Say hey Kid's" unparalleled "5-tool" abilities, places it as the pinnacle 1963 Fleer Willie Mays subject on the planet!
