(LOT 10)
1909 E101 Christy Matthewson (PSA EX 5) - "1 of 1": Highest Graded Example!

The E101 Candy cards distributed in 1909 are considered extremely condition sensitive with mid-grade or higher examples virtually impossible to locate. PSA's illustrious "pop" chart substantiates that notion with only 4.4% of the 650+ encapsulated copies carrying a technical assessment of "EX/5". With that in mind, presented here is one of the most extraordinary Christy Mathewson early 20th century cardboard artifacts, an unfathomable PSA EX/5 E101 subject. Seldom are we afforded the opportunity of associating such a strong complimentary adjective as "unfathomable" with a mid-grade specimen. However, with this supreme offering standing as the SOLE specimen at this mid-grade plateau and NO EXAMPLES GRADED HIGHER, it stands alone as the finest of its kind!

The iconic Christy Mathewson is one of the hobby's premier focal points due to his sheer domination of virtually all of the dead-ball era's hitters. The "Big Six" dominated the 20th century's first decade like no other pitcher, eventually accumulating an unfathomable 373 lifetime wins and microscopic-like 2.13 E.R.A. Nicknamed the "Christian Gentlemen", he was worshiped by virtually every avid baseball fan with his iconic stature forever embellished in our National Pastime's glorious history. We cannot imagine a more fitting testament to his immortality than this supreme cardboard marvel that synonymous with Matty's unparalleled pitching prowess, currently stands as the "king of the hill"!

The classic sideways pose seen on other early 20th century Mathewson cards (e.g., E92, E102, E106, etc.) portrays a brilliant array of blue, yellow and green background hues. Christy's timeless pitching image also depicts atypical fine focus and superior contrast as the immortal twirler delivers another one of his nearly "unhittable" fade away pitches. The relatively well-centered image somewhat favors the upper left edges between four bright white borders, and the four corners still reflect a majority of their original square formations with only a modest trace of even wear. "Unique for the grade", this undisputed pinnacle offering has retained many of its original technical attributes, and any elite enthusiast would wisely ride this "Big Six" masterpiece directly to the winner's circle!
