(LOT 80)
1914 Honus Wagner PSA Type 1 George Grantham Bain Photo – Measures Approx. 3-3/4" x 4-1/2" – PSA Type 1 LOA

This sensational 1914 Honus Wagner image was taken by the iconic photographer George Grantham Bain. Measuring approximately 3-3/4" x 4-1/2", this extremely rare original photo is accompanied by a full PSA Type I LOA with the verso including the significant George Grantham Bain News Service credit stamp that accompanies a majority of original Bain images. Wagner's immense popularity in the baseball card circuit stems from his unparalleled T206 subject that continues to reside as the hobby's "Holy Grail". The legendary stature of this tobacco card marvel has unquestionably escalated the desirability and value of his other vintage artifacts including autographs, candy cards and photos.

Regarding the latter, other than the renowned Carl Horner original T206 portrait pose, no Wagner image could possibly boast the prestige of a Bain illustration. Due to his T206 subject, Wagner's "on the field" exploits are sometimes overlooked, with the raw-boned shortstop capturing an amazing eight N.L. batting titles to the tune of a .325 lifetime batting average. In 17 seasons, he compiled 3,420 hits and 723 stolen bases, with his career highlight the 1909 World Series when his Pirates bested Ty Cobb's Tigers in seven games; the only time these two baseball giants would ever meet as foes on a baseball diamond. Images struck during the playing days of this 1936 Hall of Fame charter member are highly coveted by the hobby's most esteemed collectors, with this museum worthy marvel certainly falling into that elite category.

Wagner's stoic "standing" pose is an image we have not encountered on any other baseball card and/or image as the "Flying Dutchman" is holding what appears to be a basketball in his right hand. Donning his period style sweater and taken in a rural area, one cannot help but notice Wagner's intense facial expression as well as his colossal sized left hand. No obtrusive surface flaws are evident, with a lower right corner chip and horizontal crease running across Wagner's torso not impeding the spectacular aesthetics of this seemingly timeless keepsake. Wagner's sanctified name is affixed directly beneath his period-style spikes, and the verso includes the aforementioned George Grantham Bain stamp; the final exclamation points for this time defying and crystal-clear Wagner masterpiece! - Full PSA Type I LOA
