(LOT 22)
Amazing 1959 Topps #461 Mantle Hits 42nd Homer for Crown (PSA Gem Mint 10) – "1 of 2" & The HIGHEST GRADED Example!

Imagine, of the nearly 3,000 PSA encapsulated 1959 Topps #461 "Mantle Hits 42nd Homer for Crown" subjects, only a paltry two specimens have managed to achieve the hallowed PSA Gem Mint 10 assessment. Courtesy of Memory Lane, one of those two prized gems is now offered here, and you can be sure there will be a serious "tug of war" to eventually determine its new proud owner. The 1958 season would see the Yankees capture another World Series title, besting the Milwaukee Braves in a tightly fought 7-game contest. The Yanks were once again led by their immortal centerfielder Mickey "Charles" Mantle who would claim his 3rd Home Run Championship via his 42 round trippers. Unlike his previous two homer titles, Mantle was "dogged" all season by the Cleveland Indians up and coming star right-fielder Rocky Colavito who ended the season only a single homer short of "The Mick".

Mantle's 42nd blast would come on September 24th at Fenway Park in a 7-5 Yankees victory over their rival Red Sox. In the fourth inning with two outs and one man on base, Mantle would wallop a Tom Brewer offering far over the left-centerfield fence for his 42nd homer that would ultimately best Colavito's 41 dingers. As a tribute to Mantle's third home run championship in his then relatively short 8-year career, Topps would issue this highly coveted #461 subject that includes a brief account of the home run title on the reverse side. As previously stated, in the eyes of the meticulous PSA graders, only a single other subject has managed to achieve this sheer perfection.

The card itself exhibits nothing but the utmost "pack-fresh" qualities including a brilliant Mantle w/catcher and umpire batting image, as he zones in on a pitch that is destined to be clouted towards the furthest confines of the ballpark. Sparkling green and blue hues as well as the classic American red, white and blue background banners, are awe-inspiring to say the least, with the well-centered image residing between four blinding white borders. Immaculate surfaces, pinpoint corner tips, and no surface flaws all substantiate the sanctified "10" grade; completing this timeless cardboard classic that merits the utmost attention from any world-class PSA Set Registry and/or Mickey Mantle cardboard enthusiast!
