(LOT 9)
1961 Topps #388 Roberto Clemente (PSA Gem Mint 10) - "1 of 2"; Highest Graded

One of the 1961 Topps set's most desirable and valuable subjects is the incomparable Roberto Clemente, presented here in a "PERFECT" PSA Gem Mint 10, with only a single other specimen existing at this hallowed plateau! Indeed, of the nearly 4,100 PSA encapsulated examples, only 2 specimens have managed to achieve the sheer perfection that is ironically synonymous with Clemente's seemingly unparalleled ability. It is not an overstatement to claim that legendary Hall of Fame right fielder Roberto Clemente is worshiped by the Hispanic baseball community at a similar level that Jackie Robinson was to all African Americans.

Clemente's accomplishments are seemingly infinite, including a .317 lifetime batting average, 3,000 career hits, the 1966 regular season MVP award, four batting titles, 12 consecutive gold glove awards, and if that isn't enough, in 1971 he won the World Series MVP when he virtually single handedly dominated the Baltimore Orioles in both the batter's box and right field. Yet, as is the case with the immortal Lou Gehrig, he will best be remembered for his tragic death when, after the 1972 season, his plane crashed carrying supplies to assist earthquake victims in Nicaragua. No wonder elite enthusiasts seek his most valuable cardboard artifacts, and this immaculate "10" offering is the consummate cardboard collectible for even the most advanced collector.

The brilliant portrait Clemente pose exhibits virtually perfect centering, situated between four dazzling white borders. A gleaming surface, sparkling hues, razor sharp corner tips and immaculate verso all serve as perfect compliments to the well-merited assessment. Unquestionably, this card appears as if it has just been pulled from a 1961 Topps wax pack, unquestionably destined to become the centerpiece attraction of one of the finest PSA Registered sets extant!
