(LOT 29)
1910 E98 "Black Swamp" Hans Wagner – Red Background (PSA Gem Mint 10) – The SOLE PSA Gem Mint 10 E98 Wagner on the Planet!
What else can any hobbyist say but WOW!!!! Presented here just happens to be the SOLE PSA Gem Mint 10 Honus Wagner "Black Swamp Find" subject for ANY background color and ANY Population report! Indeed, this miraculous offering is the only E98 card to ever achieve sheer perfection, and unless a similar "Black Swamp" find resurfaces down the road, this may ultimately reside as the only E98 Anonymous Honus Wagner the hobby will ever experience. Simply stated, one could argue a collector has a better chance at hitting a jumbo lotto prize than being afforded an opportunity of owning a card such as this museum worthy masterpiece.
Not only does it carry the near-impossible "gem Mint 10" assessment, but to have a "perfect" card represent the immortal Honus Wagner literally defies logic. While more valuable, even an aesthetically pleasing T206 Honus Wagner cannot measure up to the rarity of this "unique for the grade" marvel that is the classic example of cardboard perfection. The final bidder will basically boast ownership of the finest preserved baseball card of our National Pastime's greatest shortstop to ever grace a baseball field, and after scouring the card, one can clearly see why it achieved the ultimate grade.
Hans Wagner's image literally jumps off the card via its amazing contrast and clarity, ably assisted by an immaculate red hued setting. The image atypically reveals no tilt and virtually dead-on 50/50 centering between four of the brightest white borders you will ever come across. Blistering sharp corner tips create perfect 90-degree angles, the surfaces are clearly impeccable and the verso 30-subject checklist is un-improvable. True, the Black Swamp find produced several Gem Mint 10 subjects, but NONE OF THOSE ASSESSMENTS were assigned to either Cobb or any other Hans Wagner specimen with the exception of this extraordinary offering.
The perfect testament for baseball's greatest shortstop ever, iconic Manager John McGraw always claimed Wagner to be the greatest player he ever saw with the fiery field general having seen all of the pre-war all-time greats including Ruth, Cobb, Lajoie, Collins, Joe Jackson and so many more of Cooperstown's hallowed inductees. Clearly a "one of a kind" for the grade heirloom, even the most sophisticated world-class collector would skip a beat after scouring the pristine state of this "1 of 1" Wagner that arguably stands as the finest preserved "Flying Dutchman" cardboard issue in the universe!
