(LOT 103)
1959 Armour Bacon Roger Maris KC Athletics – "Hands on Knees" Pose (PSA 8) – "1 of 2"; HIGHEST GRADED COPY!
In 1959, the Armour Bacon Company printed several Kansas City Athletic baseball player issues as a promotional tool for their popular product. Four different subjects are known to exist including two Roger Maris variations ("Hands on Knees" & "Waist High" images). Considered extremely scarce, PSA has only encapsulated 8 total Roger Maris examples for both poses COMBINED! Presented here just happens to be the highest graded "Hands on Waist" pose, a breathtaking PSA 8 specimen that has only been joined by a single other example, standing tall as the finest of its kind! Any "highest graded" Roger Maris card from his early playing days with Kansas City is a top priority for elite enthusiasts. His 61 round-trippers in 1961 to surpass the immortal Ruth's single season record will forever stand as one of our National Pastime's greatest moment.
True, this record has since then passed by the likes of McGuire, Sosa and Bonds, but their alleged association with Performance Enhancing Drugs leads many baseball purists to insist the "true" single season mark still stands at Maris' 61 tally. The card itself presents as if it has just been issued by the Armour Bacon Co., with the classic Maris "hands on knees" black & white image providing stellar contrast and crystal clear clarity. The right-side text vividly reads: "MAKE A HIT! – ALWAYS SERVE – ARMOUR FRANKS", and both surfaces are super clean. The final exclamation point are the pinpoint corners and razor sharp edging ably assisting the merited "NM/MT 8" assessment for a card that merits the highest hobby accolades from any world-class type card collector!
