(LOT 30)
Rare 1910-'12 Plow Boy Cabinet – Mordecai Brown (SGC 1.5) - One of Only 3 Professionally Graded Examples on ALL "Pop" Charts!

Among the rarest of all 20th Century tobacco issues, the approximate 5-3/4" x 8" Plow Boy cabinets were premiums that required "pipe" coupon redemptions to "obtain the baseball player of your choice." The "pipe" was actually a coupon depicting the Plow Boy character's clay pipe, which was a popular feature of the Plow Boy brand's label. Simply stated, that easily justifies the excruciating task of owning a single Plow Boy cabinet, let alone one of a distinguished Cooperstown inductee such as this superb SGC 1.5 Mordecai Brown offering. Substantiating its extreme scarcity are the COMBINED population reports for ALL professional grading services listing only a meager 2 other encapsulated specimens, both by SGC! One of the dead-ball eras legendary Hall of Famers, Brown achieved his iconic nickname when as a young farm-boy he accidently stuck his hand in a corn shredder, severely cutting his index finger and paralyzing his pinky finger.

Fortunately for Brown, his deformed hand eventually seemed to be the primary reason for the uncanny movement on his pitches, leading him to 239 career wins and a spectacular 2.06 lifetime E.R.A. that ranks as the 3rd best lifetime figure behind Walsh and Joss (and surprisingly better than Walter Johnson and Christy Mathewson!). He was as good if not better than all "dead-ball" era pitchers, explaining why advanced enthusiasts scramble to obtain his rarest cardboard relics. None could possibly be rarer than this super obscure Cabinet that depicts a "unique" landscape pitching motion of the incomparable Brown (Plow Boy cabinets featured "one of a kind" like images not utilized on other pre-war issues).

The classic sepia pose portrays remarkable contrast and clarity as the legendary right-handed twirler exhibits his classic pitching motion via a super high leg kick. No obtrusive flaws are evident, and only a handful of stray creases near the lower right quadrant and stain near the upper right corner account for the grade. One of the most desirable Mordecai Brown subjects, we highly advise you to seize this opportunity for future ownership, especially considering only a paltry two other examples have been handled by ANY grading company!
