James A. Garfield was the 20th President of the United States, serving from March 1881 until his assassination in September of that year. A preacher, lawyer, and Civil War general, Garfield was elected to nine terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and remains the only sitting House member to become president. Prior to his presidential candidacy, he was elected to the U.S. Senate by the Ohio General Assembly but declined the position upon becoming president-elect. Offered here is a cut signature from Garfield, taken from a handwritten letter, enhancing its value as it features his own handwriting.
