(LOT 44)
1923 V117 Maple Crispette PSA Registered Set - #3 on PSA Set Registry - Missing #15 Stengel

CANADIAN BASEBALL!!! Produced by the Maple Crispette Co., Ltd. candy company of Montreal, the 1923 V117 Maple Crispette is a 30-card set of American baseball players, nearly half of which have been enshrined into Cooperstown. These 1-3/8" x 2-1/4" cards were issued on a cream-colored, slightly heavier stock paper than the tobacco cards of the previous decade. Each card features a large portrait image of the player surrounded by a black border with his name and card number at the bottom. The backs, however, present an offer for collectors to exchange a set of baseball players or assortment with "Hockey Player Cards" for a ball, bat or possibly a glove. Nearly half of the 30-card set (14) are Hall of Famers including #4 Eddie Collins, #8 Babe Ruth, #22 Ty Cobb and #30 Walter Johnson, as well as #15 Casey Stengel, which was short-printed with potentially only a single example in existence. The short-print of Stengel likely prohibited the trade of the more costly items offered, but has also made it extremely difficult for a complete V117 Maple Crispette to be assembled.

Offered here is the #3 ranked 1923 V117 Maple Crispette set on PSA heralded Set Registry. This painstakingly gathered near-set (missing Stengel) features one PSA 7 Bucky Harris; two PSA 6; one PSA 5.5; 11 PSA 5 including Collins, Hoyt & Sewell; two PSA 4.5; seven PSA 4 including Traynor, Roush, Pennock & Johnson; two PSA 3.5 including Ruth & Bottomley; two PSA 3 including Cobb; and one PSA 2.5. Twelve of these rare issues are POP 1 editions with seven at POP 2 and an additional five as POP 3. Two of these incredible cards are the highest graded in the hobby with nine only offering a single card graded higher and seven with two examples surpassing the card. This unbelievably rare offering is made for the set builder who is looking to sit atop the PSA Set Registry.
