(LOT 15)
Extremely Rare 1910s Ty Cobb "Granulated Cut Plug" Tobacco Tin
RARE TY COBB TIN!!! The offered circa-1911 Ty Cobb Tobacco Tin is one of the rarities of the 1910s, given the fact that the tobacco itself was not immensely popular, so many of the tins were likely discarded by tobacco users and replaced with a more desirable product. Luckily for some Ty Cobb enthusiasts, this short-lived Ty Cobb "Granulated Cut Plug" tin is one of only a few known to exist. Purportedly the companion piece of the ultra-rare 1909-11 T206 Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb back, it is alleged that this originally housed the super-rare T206 example.
The "Cobb/Cobb" has only been encapsulated only 20 times by PSA and tins of the Ty Cobb Granulated Cut Plugs have surfaced only a fraction of that for auction. Though unconfirmed that the Cobb/Cobb was distributed in this manner, it stands to reason that the two rarities may be related in this way. Regardless of the distribution of either, this incredibly rare tin has survived more than 114 years and still offers rich red color, excellent and clear text and printing, and a Ty Cobb Bat on Shoulder image. Arguably the greatest hitter in history and certainly the best player in the 1900s and 1910s, with all due respect to Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb won 12 batting titles, the Triple Crown in 1909 and the 1911 American League MVP Award.
As one of the few Ty Cobb tins to endure more than a century of display and storage, this 3-1/4" x 4-1/2" x 1" metal tobacco holder remains in good condition with an intact hinge and bright colors with moderate wear in the form of rust at top and bottom. No glaring dents are evident. Ty Cobb cards are some of the hobby's most desirable in existence and souvenirs displaying the Georgia Peach are equally sought-after. This incredibly rare 1910s Ty Cobb tobacco tin combines the two to make one of the most interesting and coveted relics in the industry.
