GALVESTON GIANT!!!... Jack Johnson overcame the racism of the day to become the first black heavyweight champion of the world. Born in Galveston, he was dubbed the Galveston Giant and he learned many of his boxing skills in "battle royals" and in jail as prizefighting was illegal in Texas. Over his career, Johnson fought 123 sanctioned bouts going 77-13-14 with 19 no-decisions and 49 knockouts. The offered 1911 T9 Turkey Red Jack Johnson is a rare find to be sure. This 3 VG example presents an impressive ornate wood-grain frame with Johnson at center. Even wear and minimal foxing are present, but this one is still striking even 113 years after production.
