1909-11 T206 Christy Mathewson Portrait Hindu Brown SGC 2 GOOD
MATTY BROWN HINDU!!!... The legendary Christy Mathewson's T206 portrait image, originally struck by Carl Horner in the early 1900s, continues to be one of his most iconic poses. Indeed, Matty's T206 portrait subject is a hobby cornerstone, and when you add a super scarce advertisement back, it creates a collecting frenzy. Presented here just happens to be an SGC 2 T206 Mathewson Portrait boasting the ever-elusive Brown Hindu ad-back, one of only 15 SGC encapsulated copies at the time this was written! Furthermore, it's no secret as to the popularity of any Brown Hindu subject, with the highly regarded T206 Resource website listing Brown Hindu as the 14th scarcest cigarette advertisement of the total 39 ad-backs. Issued during the peak of his remarkable career, the 1909 campaign would see the Big Six post 25 wins and his lowest single-season E.R.A. of his career, a microscopic 1.14 figure.
He would end his remarkable career with 373 wins and a 2.13 ERA, with Christy's greatest achievement being his still unmatched three complete-game shutouts in the 1905 World Series against the Philadelphia Athletics. Matty's crystal-clear immortal pose has eluded any glaring flaws, with the sparkling yellow/orange background still boasting a majority of its original hue. Accounting for the assessment is typical corner wear, mild notching along the edges, and several stray wrinkles barely visible to the naked eye. The final thumbs-up is the verso's bold brown Hindu/Factory No. 649 advertisement that far supersedes a few areas of soiling, with this super scarce Matty marvel worthy of any esteemed rare ad-back tobacco gathering!
