1971 Topps #525 Ernie Banks SGC 9 MINT
MR. SUNSHINE!!!... In 1971, Ernie Banks turned 40 just prior to the start of the season, a season that would be his last. Mr. Cub spent 19 years with the Northsiders and remained jovial, outgoing and personable no matter what, especially to fans. Despite the fact that Banks never once played in a playoff game, the fans dubbed the two-time NL MVP "Mr. Cub" and the Hall of Fame infielder returned the love to his Chicago neighbors. Over his incredible career, Banks collected 2,583 hits, including 407 doubles and 512 home runs, while batting .274 and driving in 1,636 RBIs. In 2013, President Barack Obama presented the 14-time All-Star with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
His famed "Let's Play Two!" quip, which originated on a steamy 100-degree day in 1969, can be seen all over Wrigley Field. Offered here is a 1971 Topps #525 Ernie Banks card graded 9 MINT by SGC. This one has it all with outstanding qualities including pack-fresh surfaces, brilliant hues and clarity his classic bat-over-shoulder portrait, and near-impossible to find spot-on centering. Of course, the most significant attribute are the near-immaculate black borders that only reveal the slightest microscopic areas of touching along the edging. Sadly, Mr. Cub passed one year before the Chicago Cubs captured the 2016 World Series.
