1921 W551 Babe Ruth/Ty Cobb Hand-Cut Strip PSA 7 NM – POP 1; Only Two PSA Examples Graded Higher!

THE BABE & TYRUS!!! Presented here is an extraordinary PSA 7 NM 1921 W551 hand-cut strip arguably boasting baseball's two greatest all-time players, the incomparable Babe and Ty Cobb. Unique for the grade, this POP 1 marvel has only been bested by a paltry two PSA examples! The 1921 W551 Strip set included 30+ sports personalities portrayed in colorful line drawings, of which 10 represented formidable baseball players. Other than the one of a kind 1924 Knight Motors Inc. Ruth/Cobb issue that sold for $32K in January 2024, we cannot recall any other mainstream cardboard issue boasting these two iconic stars. By 1921, the mighty Bambino had taken the Big Apple by storm, with his record setting 54 dingers in 1920 literally out-homering virtually every team.

The Babe would best that mark in 1921, walloping 59 round-trippers and leading the Yankees to the AL pennant. Meanwhile, in the Motor City, the Georgia Peach was fresh off the heels of another outstanding campaign, posting a .334 average that he would augment to .389 the year this rare strip was issued. The extraordinary two-card panel features a classic Ruth portrait pose and an awe-inspiring Cobb batting image as he completes the historic swing that led to a .366 record-high batting average. Robust red and blue hues for these immaculate line drawings truly steal the show, with the factory issued perforation between the two cards completely intact. Additional superlatives supporting the grade include crystal-clear clarity, relatively clean surfaces, sharp manual cuts, and excellent centering for one of the most electrifying early 1920s cardboard treasures!
