(LOT 1117)
1915 D303 General Baking Co. Tris Speaker SGC 1.5 FAIR – Only One SGC Example Graded Higher!

THE GRAY EAGLE!!! In 1915, the General Baking Co. issued an extremely rare 51-subject baseball card set depicting identical images on the renowned E106 caramels. Ultra-condition sensitive due to the glossy surface's susceptibility to cracking, seldom do examples surface in any grade. Dubbed D303s, one of the set's most prestigious Cooperstown inductees is the immortal center fielder Tris Speaker, presented here in an eye pleasing SGC 1.5 holder, with only two of the ten SGC and PSA encapsulated examples reflecting a higher grade! Issued the year that Speaker's BoSox would win the world championship, the following year, the Gray Eagle would end Ty Cobb's string of nine consecutive AL batting titles by pacing the Junior Circuit via a .386 mark. His classic batting pose reveals rich hues and fine resolution, with one of the somewhat hidden wrinkles running across the top of Speaker's stockings to the right border. No glaring flaws are evident on either side, with border toning, even corner wear, and some ad back decolorization accounting for the assessment. The final exclamation point is the super obscure "GENERAL BAKING CO." advertisement, with this elusive D303 Speaker boasting aesthetics far beyond its technical assessment!
