(LOT 1069)
Pair of 1913 Oshkosh Baseball Yearbooks with Dummy Hoy

SCARCE OSHKOSH YEARBOOKS!!! Presented here are two Oshkosh Baseball yearbooks, issued in 1913 to provide a thorough history of the Oshkosh, Wisconsin amateur baseball team created in 1865 by Col. Henry B. Harshaw. This popular local team was named the Everetts after the principal of Oshkosh High School, Arthur Everett, eventually fielding its inaugural professional team in 1887 (as part of the Northwestern League). Of significant note, its rightful place within this extraordinary Hoy/Taylor collection is William "Dummy" Hoy's inclusion as a member of that famous 1887 professional team. Baseball's greatest all-time deaf player, Dummy Hoy would enjoy a sensational campaign with Oshkosh in 1887, with the fleet-footed center fielder batting .367 and stealing 67 bases.

He would then move on to the National League's Washington Nationals in 1888, embarking on a stellar 14-year MLB career. Pages 14 and 15 include Hoy's images as part of a classic team photo (Pg. 14 – seated far left, bottom row) and an imposing team composite (Pg. 15 – situated in the center, bottom row). The interior pages of both 48-page yearbooks are completely intact, with one of the string-bound periodicals revealing serious chipping, soiling, staining, and scattered creasing. Extremely scarce, these yearbooks conjure up vivid memories of how the legendary 5'4" Dummy Hoy overcame several obstacles to become our National Pastime's most celebrated deaf player!
