(LOT 995)
1917 Grover Alexander Batting PSA Type 1 George Grantham Bain Photo - Measures Approx. 4" x 5"

THE GREAT GROVER!!! Grover Alexander's pitching exploits justify why he stands tall as one of the greatest pitchers in MLB history. From 1915 through 1917, he put together three of the most imposing successive campaigns imaginable, winning three consecutive pitching Triple Crowns (leading the NL in wins, ERA and strikeouts) while compiling 30 or more wins all three seasons! This spectacular Old Pete PSA Type 1 photo was taken by the iconic George Grantham Bain during the 1917 campaign. The extremely rare image reveals Alexander in an obscure batting pose, boasting impeccable contrast and clarity. This 107-year-old offering eludes any major surface flaws, with Alexander's name and team printed in bold white text along the upper edge. The verso includes the critical George Grantham Bain credit stamp as well as a June 4, 1917 violet stamp. Our research has dated this particular game to June 2, 1917, with Alexander besting the Pirates at Forbes Field by a 9-1 score. As usual, Grover went the distance for his eighth win of the season, limiting Pittsburgh to eight scattered hits, walking none and besting fellow HOF twirler Burleigh Grimes. He would even stroke a double and score a run, ultimately winning 30 games and winning his unprecedented third consecutive Triple Crown!
