(LOT 390)
1914 Cracker Jack #57 Walter Johnson SGC 1 PR

THE BIG TRAIN!!! Standing tall as the greatest pitcher who ever toed a rubber, Walter Johnson's immortality is etched in stone via his remarkable 417 lifetime wins, 110 shutouts, and microscopic 2.17 ERA, with the first two achievements standing as modern-day records! One of Walter's most exalted cardboard issues is his 1914 Cracker Jack subject, offered here in an SGC 10 holder. Issued during the season this 1936 HOF charter member would lead the Junior Circuit with 28 wins and 287 strikeouts (as well as posting a spectacular 1.72 ERA), the numerous condition-related issues do not compromise the critical pitching pose as the Big Train is about to unleash another side-armed blazing fastball. The technical assessment is based on two minuscule pinholes (one near the upper edge and the other along the upper left border), typical scattered staining/spoiling on both sides, several diminutive surface abrasions on both sides (including one directly to the right of Johnson's left shoulder as well as beneath his left cleat), and a few scattered wrinkles including a diagonal crease within the lower left quadrant. Yet, Walter's glowing image, fine centering, and the simple right to own a copy of this hallowed Johnson heirloom more than justify its esteemed stature!
