(LOT 162)
1933 Goudey #53 Babe Ruth PSA 4.5 VG-EX+

YELLOW BAMBINO!!! Of the four 1933 Goudey Ruths, the most coveted subject is the exalted #53 Yellow Babe. This superb PSA 4.5 example portrays an electrifying Bambino batting pose originally taken by none other than the immortal Charles Conlon in 1927. The illustrious Boston based Goudey Gum Company issued their landmark 240-subject set in 1933, with the Sultan of Swat's unparalleled stature the main driver for Goudey issuing four separate Ruth subjects. As previously stated, the "Holy Grail" of those four Ruth's is the #53 yellow subject, with mid-grade copies consistently fetching in the $30K-$40K range. Substantiating its hallowed stature were PSA 9 and PSA 8 examples realizing record-breaking $4.2 million and $900K price tags, respectively, both in Memory Lane auctions. This offering reveals an aesthetically pleasing Babe Ruth batting image bursting with sparkling hues, highlighted by a radiant yellow background. While the image does favor the left edge between four bright-white borders, the lack of any obtrusive surface flaws on either side more than offsets the typically seen skewed positioning. Even corner wear and a faint lower left corner wrinkle prevent a higher assessment, with the stellar visual appeal worthy of any premier Ruth gathering!
