1881 A.J. Reach Signed Hand-Written Letter to Nicholas Young applying for "League Alliance Membership" PSA/DNA
A.J. Reach was a player but was most notably known for helping found the Philadelphia Phillies franchise. This letter is written to Nicholas Young, who served as the National League President from 1885-1902. Reach is writing Young to apply for membership in the League Alliance. The League Alliance was the first semi-affiliated minor league baseball league. Independent baseball teams were to affiliate with National League teams, which would honor their respective contracts.
The league only existed for one season, 1877, though another version was attempted in 1882 which serves as the background for A.J. Reach's membership request from 1881 which reads in full, "Sir: The Phila. ball club of Phila. PA. respectfully applies for League Alliance Membership, and you are hereby authorized to attach our signature to the original "League Alliance Agreement" in your possession. Respectfully, A.J. Reach Treasurer". An unbelievable part of baseball history from one baseball executive to another. PSA/DNA LOA included.
