(LOT 459)
1933 Goudey #89 Tris Speaker PSA 8 NM-MT - Only One PSA Example Graded Higher!

SPEAKER GUM CARD!!! Scarce for the grade, this PSA 8 NM-MT Speaker subject is only bested by a single PSA specimen! The Gray Eagle's illustrious career commenced with Boston in 1907, and while he played sparingly for the Red Sox in 1907 and 1908, Speaker's breakout season came in 1909 when he accumulated over 600 plate appearances and recorded a stellar .309 batting average. The rest of the story is history, for the highly skilled Speaker finished his incredible 22-year career with an amazing 3,514 safeties to the tune of a .345 lifetime batting average that suffices as the sixth finest figure in baseball history. Nearly as impressive as his magnificent batting skills was the fleet-footed Speaker's remarkable defensive prowess which enabled him to play an extremely shallow center field.

This ultimately led to Speaker accumulating the most outfield assists in baseball history, with his record-setting 449 figure besting the second place Cobb by an overwhelming 57 margin (including a single-season record of 35 assists in his first full 1909 season). His iconic batting pose reveals Speaker completing his classic swing as he most likely has scorched another line-drive safety. A radiant yellow setting, atypical near-perfect centering between four white borders, and blisteringly sharp corner tips all combine to justify the esteemed assessment. As a point of reference, another 8 example fetched over $30K in a Memory Lane 2022 auction, with this lofty price tag and Speaker's resounding stature as one of baseball's greatest all-time center fielders placing this pack-fresh keepsake as one of the landmark Goudey set's finest subjects!
