Iconic c.1950s Ty Cobb Sliding into Third PSA Type 4 Encapsulated Culver Pictures Photo (Originally Struck by Charles Conlon c.1910s) – Measures Approx. 5" x 7"
ICONIC COBB IMAGE!!! One of the hobby's most iconic original photos is this circa 1910s Charles Conlon image of Ty Cobb aggressively sliding into third base ahead of New York Highlanders third-baseman Jimmy Austin's tag during a game at New York's Hillside Park. Its immortal stature prompted a staggering $390K sale for one of the few known Type 1 examples in a 2020 public auction. While not a Type 1 illustration, this PSA Type 4 photo reveals the exact same image, restruck by the prestigious New York based Culver Pictures from a duplicate negative or photo in the 1950s. Although not an original Conlon, the illustrious image is exactly the same, still revealing fine clarity/contrast as you can clearly see Cobb's grimacing facial expression as he beats Austin's futile tag. An additional captivating feature is the myriad of dust kicked up by the fiery Georgia Peach via his violent slide. Some border toning and two clear tape remnants along the lower right and left borders do not compromise the well-contrasted image that has eluded any obtrusive flaws. The final compliment is the verso's Culver picture credit stamp, with this world-class offering arguably portraying the most revered baseball image!
