(LOT 7)
1913 Pastime Novelty Christy Mathewson Postcard SGC 5 EX – POP 2; Only Two SGC 5.5 Examples Graded Higher!

SCARCE MATTY!!! This extremely scarce SGC 5 EX 1913 Pastime Novelty Co. Christy Mathewson commemorative postcard reveals an SGC POP 2 standing, bested by only two SGC 5.5 examples! SGC has only encapsulated 11 total copies, substantiating its utmost rarity. Most significantly, the classic Matty hands-over-head pitching image was originally taken at Philadelphia's Shibe Park on October 8, 1913 as the Big Six warmed up before pitching against the Athletics great Eddie Plank in Game Two of the Fall Classic. The immortal Matty would beat Plank 3-0, tossing his record-setting fourth complete shutout game of the World Series. Unfortunately for Christy and the Giants, Connie Mack's A's would ultimately win the series in five games, with Plank exacting some revenge by defeating Mathewson 3-1 in the clincher. A breathtaking mid-grade offering, you can literally feel Matty's intensity as he warms up on the sidelines, preparing to wage battle. Superior image quality and fine centering steal the show, with the final compliment being the imposing lower border caption eloquently reading: "OUR MATTY, CHRIS MATHEWSON, the World's Greatest Pitcher. This photograph was taken at Shibe Park, October 8th, 1913."
