1953 Topps #244 Willie Mays PSA 6 EX-MT
1953 TOPPS MAYS!!! In 1952 & '53, Willie Mays played baseball for the United States Army during the Korean War at Fort Eustis in Virginia. It was at Ft. Eustis that he reportedly learned the basket catch. Giants' manager kept tabs on his center fielder while in the service and often chastised him when he overexerted himself by stealing bases or playing basketball. Seems like times don't change. When Mays returned to New York, he wrecked National League pitchers with a league leading .345 batting average and a .667 slugging percentage. Leading his team to the 1954 World Series championship over the Cleveland Indians, Willie Mays easily captured the NL MVP award. Offered here is his 1953 Topps #244 Willie Mays PSA 6 EX-MT card. This beautiful example shows excellent centering, great color and great borders. The 1953 Topps issue is one of the most sought-after sets in the industry and Mays is one of the key cards from the heralded release.
