1934 Goudey #1 Signed Jimmie Foxx Goudey PSA 4 VG-EX Card Grade PSA 8 AUTO – POP 2; Highest PSA Graded Example!
AUTOGRAPHED "XX" GOUDEY!!! This extraordinary 1934 Goudey #1 Jimmie Foxx treasure has been boldly signed by Foxx, proudly residing as one of only three PSA scripted examples! Defying 90 years of potential wear, its super-eye-pleasing PSA 4 VG-EX grade places it as one of the two highest graded specimens on any population report, justifying its Cooperstown worthy stature! Boldly signed "Jimmie Foxx" in typical vertical fashion to the left of Foxx's sanctified Charles Conlin batting pose, the PSA 8 black ink script literally jumps off the card, neatly penned during an era when "XX" was terrorizing American League hurlers. Along with Hornsby and Aaron, many baseball historians consider Jimmy Foxx one of the three greatest right-handed hitters in baseball history.
Nicknamed "The Beast" because of his awe-inspiring muscular physique and uncanny power, the sight of Foxx stepping into a batter's box was a frightening concept for any pitcher, with this icon blasting 534 lifetime homers and, along with Gehrig, knocking in a record 100 or more runs in 13 consecutive seasons. The year before this card was issued, Foxx would claim the 1933 American League Triple Crown by belting 48 dingers, batting in 163 runs and posting a sensational .356 batting average via his 204 safeties. He was now the toast of the town, with the City of Brotherly Love worshiping this Goliath of a slugger. Foxx is one of a handful of sluggers who belted a home run into Yankee Stadium's left-field upper deck, and he would end his extraordinary 20-year career with a .325 average, 1,922 RBIs and an unfathomable 1.038 OPS, placing him as one of our national pastime's greatest all-time sluggers. In lieu of his 1933 Triple Crown, it comes as little surprise that the landmark Goudey Gum Company selected Foxx as the #1 subject for their prestigious 1934 gathering.
Save for Ruth, Gehrig and DiMaggio, his 1930s cards are widely recognized as the most desirable and valuable mementos from the decade. Regarding this highest graded PSA 4 VG-EX autographed '34 Goudey Foxx, his crystal-clear image reveals "XX" in his familiar Philadelphia Athletics gray flannels, unleashing his mighty swing that has most likely crushed another horsehide sphere towards the furthest confines of the ballpark. Most significantly, the sparkling illustration is virtually dead-centered between four modestly toned borders; a vibrant yellow-hued background reveals only mild toning; no glaring surface blemishes are evident on either side; and the four corners reveal even wear consistent with the grade. Interestingly enough, virtually all of the few existing 1933 and 1934 signed Goudey Foxx subjects reveal his autograph in a vertical format, with Foxx choosing to script his hallowed name in the uncompromised yellow area of the card for maximum aesthetics.
When considering overall eye appeal, this momentous Foxx offering resides as one of his finest signed Goudey specimens for either year, with a 1933 Goudey PSA 4 scripted example fetching a record-setting $124K in 2021. It's no secret that signed vintage cards for baseball's most iconic players are currently achieving stratospheric price tags, with the floodgates officially opening for the likes of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson and Mickey Mantle, just to mention a few. Based on Foxx's remarkable batting feats and some previously realized hefty pricing points for other signed Foxx Goudeys, "XX" truly belongs in this exalted mix. That said, we cannot imagine a finer testament to his unequivocal legacy than this pinnacle autographed heirloom, proudly residing as one of only three documented PSA copies and sharing the spotlight with a single other example as the best of the best!
