(LOT 1362)
1950 Bowman Football #1 Doak Walker PSA 8 NM-MT – NONE Graded Higher!

HIGHEST GRADED #1 WALKER!!!... The #1 subject of any mainstream set continues to remain the toughest card to locate in high-grade condition, with this PSA 8 NM-MT 1950 Bowman Football #1 Doak Walker sharing the spotlight with seventeen other examples as the finest of its kind! Considering the #1 card was always placed on top of the stack, it was subjected to sunlight, severe rubber band blemishes and other flaws resulting with the card being directly exposed to various types of damage. In this particular case and incredible as it may seem, this PSA Doak Walker currently stands as the ONLY 1950 Bowman subject that has not achieved a SINGLE HIGHER GRADE than an NM-MT 8! Indeed, 143 of the 144 subjects from the 1950 Bowman set have at least one card graded a PSA 9 or 10, with Walker residing as the only player with a PSA 8 as the highest technical assessment.

Synonymous with this miraculous population data is Doak Walker's grid-iron legacy with the star halfback a member of both the Collegiate and Professional Football Hall of Fames. In 1948 he won the illustrious Heisman Trophy for his spectacular performance with Southern Methodist University and he played six seasons with the Detroit Lions, winning the rookie of the year in 1950, being part of five All-Pro teams and claiming two consecutive NFL Championships (1952 & '53). As the ultimate honor for this extremely well-respected superstar, in 1990, the Doak Walker Award was established in his name and has been awarded to the top collegiate running back every season since its inception. This brilliant offering portrays the exalted running back in a neat pose as he is about to catch a tossed football. Highlights of this extremely well-centered classic include the immaculate green grass background, crystal-clear clarity, white borders, pinpoint corners and relatively clean surfaces. Most significantly, it's 8 NM-MT grade places this #1 subject alongside a handful of its peers to proudly reside at the top of the illustrious PSA Pop Chart!
