An Orotone photograph is one of the early photographic techniques from the late 19th century. Bob Mathews, the photograph subject, made his baseball debut in 1891, hence the probable date.
A Surreal Photo Image! The Mathews image is so vivid that he appears to jump out at you! An Orotone photograph is three dimensional in quality. A gold pigment is used in the process to make the Orotone photograph. The results of the Orotone process creates great depth in the photo image which appears exquisite even by today’s standards.
Bob Mathews, who played one game for American Association Philadelphia Athletics (you can see the partial athletics on his uniform jersey) on September 25, 1891, and had one hit in three at bats, scored a run and struck out once. Photographs such as these are nearly impossible to find, and fetch large amounts.
A recently sold 1904 Orotone photograph of Navajo riders in the Canon de Chelly in Arizona sold at Christie’s for $23,000.

The Orotone process:
This photograph was created with a glass plate and a silver gelatin emulsion, used to generate a negative. Following exposure and development , a contact print is made from the negative; then the rear surface of the glass plate of the print is painted with gold pigment, to yield a golden-toned positive image. This was a very expensive process because of the use of gold.
