1940 Play Ball #225 Joe Jackson PSA 4 VG-EX

SHOELESS JOE!!!... The ultra-popularity of the 1940 Play Ball set is due to the number of bygone immortals who grace this issue, especially including Christy Mathewson, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson and the incomparable "Shoeless Joe" Jackson. It is no secret that the number of Joe Jackson subjects issued during his playing days are few and far between, with his 1909 E90-1 Rookie; 1914-15 Cracker Jack; 1916 M101-4/5, and 1917 Collins McCarthy/Boston Store cards sufficing as his major mainstream cards. The dilemma for obtaining any of these Jackson keepsakes is their current stratospheric price tags, with only Jackson's rogue 1919 W514 strip card a reasonably affordable issue.

That said, collectors continue to gravitate towards Jackson's 1940 Play Ball #225 subject, and while it was issued after his esteemed playing days, it fortunately includes the Charles Conlon iconic Joe Jackson batting image that arguably resides as his most exalted illustration. This offering reveals an atypical near-perfectly centered Jackson central image as the legendary left-fielder scorches another line drive off of the sweet spot of his famous "Black Betsy" lumber drenched with pine tar. No glaring surface blemishes are evident and even corner wear as well as scattered toning account for the grade. A superb heirloom, it conjures up memories of how Shoeless Joe's remarkable career was tragically cut short due to his alleged involvement in the 1919 "Black-Sox" scandal that rocked the baseball community!
