(LOT 555)
1928 Tharp's Ice Cream #27 Ty Cobb SGC 5 EX w/Near-Perfect Centering – "POP 1"; Only One SGC Example Graded Higher!

TYRUS ICE CREAM TREAT!!!... The 1928 campaign would be the Georgia Peach's final hurrah, with Cobb ending his unparalleled career playing for Connie Mack's Athletics in the City of Brotherly Love. In typical fashion, Tyrus would post a stellar .323 batting average, the 23rd consecutive season in which he surpassed the .300 mark! As a perfect testament for Cobb's grand exodus, presented here is a breathtaking SGC 5 EX Tharp's Ice Cream #27 treat that stands alone at this unique SGC grade, only bested by a single SGC example. Indeed, like the iconic Cobb, this extraordinary scarcity has managed to survive in super eye pleasing condition, with most of these ultra-condition sensitive cards reflecting poor technical assessments. In 1928, a number of popular ice cream manufacturers issued baseball cards with their brand products including Yuengling's, Tharp's and Harrington's, with Tharp's the rarest of the three.

Regarding Cobb, unlike his plentiful pre-1920 tobacco and candy card issues, it is a significantly tougher task obtaining his more obscure 1920s caramel and ice cream card issues. Justifying this notion is the total number of Tharp's Cobb cards (only eight SGC examples) representing less than 0.5% of his more common T206 subjects. Cobb's captivating batting pose portrays impeccable contrast and clarity, with the major highlight being the near-perfect centering that is a virtually impossible feature. No glaring surface flaws are apparent on either side, and the flip side reflects a redemption offering whereby one gallon of Tharp's ice cream will be delivered free in exchange for a complete set of 60 subjects. A bona fide world-class heirloom, its combined Tharp's rarity, brilliant batting image, remarkable centering and the fact that it was distributed in the Georgia Peach's final campaign all combine to earn it the highest hobby accolades!
