(LOT 522)
1910 E93 Standard Caramel Honus Wagner (Nagy Collection) SGC 6 EX-NM – "SGC POP 1"

"POP 1" CARAMEL WAGNER!!!... Fresh off the heels of his inaugural 1909 world championship against Cobb's Detroit club, Pittsburgh's superstar shortstop Honus Wagner was the toast of the Steel City, having also captured his fourth consecutive NL batting crown. One of the Flying Dutchman's most popular cards issued the year after his celebrated World Series title is his 1910 E93 Standard Caramel Honus Wagner throwing pose candy treat, which was part of a 30-subject set also featuring the likes of Cobb, Mathewson, and Young. Presented here just happens to be that highly coveted E93 Wagner keepsake in a stellar SGC 6 EX-NM holder, a true SGC POP 1, with only three SGC examples graded higher! Honus Wagner's premier hobby stature was achieved via his iconic T206 "Holy Grail" jewel that is currently realizing $2 million+ price tags for low grade specimens! This offering suffices as one of the finer E93 Wagner's in the hobby, with its radiant aesthetics virtually defying 113 years of potential wear. While the grade speaks for itself, the sanctified throwing pose literally transcends time back to Wagner's glorious playing days.

His peers insisted that when Honus fielded a ground-ball, he appeared to also scoop up a bunch of pebbles, hurling both the ball and pebbles towards first base. This offering portrays Wagner once again completing that exercise with his hallowed throwing image depicting near flawless clarity, contrast and sparkling gray hues. The well-centered illustration is affixed to a strikingly robust red background, only slightly favoring the right edge. Both sides have sidestepped any obtrusive flaws, with the assessment due to even corner wear and some faint soling spots along the upper left border. A relatively clean 30-player checklist back is the final exclamation point for a card that seldom surfaces depicting the scarce 6 EX-NM grade. What else can we possibly say regarding a POP 1 card representing the greatest shortstop to ever play the game, surpassed by only three meager SGC examples. Honus Wagner's exalted baseball status as well as his immortal T206 subject will forever justifying why collectors' hearts skip a beat at the thought of purchasing any pre-WWI Wagner card, with this low-pop E93 memento proudly residing as one of his finest to choose from!
