1927 W560 Hand Cut Lou Gehrig SGC 7.5 NM+
1927 IRON HORSE!!!... Presented here is a seldom surfacing SGC 7.5 NM+ 1927 W560 hand-cut "3 of Clubs" Lou Gehrig marvel that has been joined by only five other SGC examples at this lofty plateau with a mere 14 specimens graded higher. One of the more eclectic 1920s issues is the 64-card W560 set distributed in 1927 on uncut 16-card sheets. Measuring approximately 1-3/4" x 2-3/4", the blank-back subjects appear in the form of playing cards, reflecting 49 different ballplayers with a centered suit including spades, clubs, hearts and diamonds, as well as a selected face value (e.g., Ace, King, Queen, etc.).
Some of the set's most momentous players include Babe Ruth (Joker), Lou Gehrig (3 of Clubs), Walter Johnson (2 of Spades), and Jimmie Foxx (Joker). Ironically issued during the momentous 1927 Yankees season, it was that glorious campaign when Gehrig captured the AL MVP Award while joining forces with Babe Ruth to lead Murderers' Row and company to a World Championship. Gehrig's stoic portrait image portrays the Iron Horse reflecting a good-natured smile, with the black print and cream-colored surface eluding any notable surface flaws over the past 96 years. The final thumbs up is a razor-sharp perimeter including four right-angled corners for one of the few 1927 Gehrig cardboard issues extant, and a bona fide testament for that historical 1927 campaign!
