(LOT 1486)
1939 Play Ball Near-Set 157/161 Graded and Ungraded

NEAR-SET!!! One of the most momentous sets ever distributed was the 1939 Play Ball 161-subject compilation issued by the prestigious Gum Inc. Company (Checklist is numbered to #162, but subject #126 was inexplicably never issued, accounting for only 161 subjects). This landmark gathering includes a myriad of Cooperstown Inductees with its imposing black & white images and reverse side player bios highly coveted by the hobby's most esteemed cardboard enthusiasts. Similar to many sets, high-numbered commons (#s 116–162) carry a strong premium versus their earlier issued brethren, and their serious condition sensitivity (especially centering/skewed images) places a strong emphasis on capturing tough to find high-grade specimens.

We are excited to be offering this near-set of 157/161 cards, missing #s: 26, 43, 92 & 140. The balance of the near-set is PSA-graded and ungraded, with the 11 ungraded cards as follows in EX condition: #7, 14, 25, 35, 68, 85, 98, 107, 153, 161 & 162. The balance is PSA & SGC-graded, with the key cards as follows: #3 Ruffing PSA 3, #6 Durocher PSA 8, #19 Dean PSA 6, #30 Dickey PSA 6, #48 Gomez PSA 7, #50 Gehringer PSA 6.5, #51 Ott PSA 4, #53 Hubbell PSA 6, #56 Greenberg PSA 7.5, #89 L. Waner PSA 6, #94 Manush PSA 7, #103 Berg PSA 5, #112 P. Waner PSA 6 & #143 Averill PSA 6. There are two SGC-graded cards as follows: #74 Lavagetto SGC 5 & #85 Cooney SGC 4. SMR Value pushing $8,000 for the graded cards, this is one to consider. Add the four missing cards to complete this vintage find!
