BROWN DAVIS ROOKIE!!! At the behest of Jim Brown, Ernie Davis took over backfield duties for the future Hall of Famer in 1959 through 1961. In '59, Davis led the Orangemen to the National Championship and in 1961, he became the first African American player to capture the Heisman Trophy. Sadly, the Cleveland Browns #1 overall pick in the 1962 NFL Draft passed away at 23 from leukemia leaving us all to wonder what could have been. This short print 1962 Topps issue of the College Football HOFer is one of the highest graded in the hobby with only two examples graded higher.
