(LOT 158)
Ultra-Scarce June 15, 1958 World Cup (Sweden); Brazil vs. USSR Ticket Stub – Pele's Debut – PSA 1 (MK)

PELE DEBUT!!! Along with the likes of Ruth, Ali, Thorpe and Jordan, no discussion of the greatest all-time athletes could possibly exclude the immortal Pele who in 1999 was named the "Athlete of the Century" by the International Olympic Committee. The undisputed greatest soccer player of all-time, his lifetime 1,279 goals in 1,363 games (including friendlies) still stands as a Guinness World Record. Pele's World Cup Debut took place on June 15, 1958, when the 17-year-old budding star played in the third match of the first round against the USSR in Stockholm, Sweden. Pele had been previously sidelined with a minor knee injury, but he did manage to play well and added an assist in Brazil's 2-0 win.

Fourteen days later, Pele became the youngest player to ever play in a World Cup Final, scoring two goals in Brazil's 5-2 victory over the host Sweden club. This magnificent June 15, 1958 ticket stub just happens to represent Pele's World Cup debut, turning back the clock some 65 years to that most significant event. Graded a PSA 1 (MK), the "MK" qualifier is due to a negligible pen notation on the verso. Although, a vertical mailing fold through the center of the ticket accounts for the "1" assessment, the overall eye pleasing aesthetics are consistent with most VG+ examples. It's no secret that historic debut tickets are realizing staggering pricing points, with Jackie Robinson and Michael Jordan examples fetching record-setting $480k and 468k prices in 2022. That said, Pele's unequivocal place in World Sports compares or exceeds virtually all of his athletic peers, justifying why we anticipate a fierce bidding war for this revered heirloom!
