The tragic airplane crash that claimed the life of Yankees 32-year-old star catcher Thurman Munson on August 2, 1979 has left an indelible mark on his storied career. While the seven-time AL All-Star catcher's list of accomplishments include a 1970 Rookie of the Year Award, two world-championships (77-78), three Gold Glove Awards (1973-75) and an American League MVP in 1976, synonymous to the immortal Lou Gehrig and Roberto Clemente, his untimely passing truly stands as his profound legacy. For that reason alone, the beloved Yankees captain's autographed memorabilia is highly coveted in the collecting community and seldom surfaces for the taking.
Presented here is one of the most extraordinary of all scripted Munson artifacts, a unique 1970 Topps vault Thurman Munson signature sheet that includes a whopping FIVE "Thurman Munson" bold blue ink signatures, each conservatively grading 9 Mint! As standard protocol, legendary Topps owner/founder Cy Berger would send these signature sheets to the players for purposes of utilizing one of the scripts as a facsimile autograph on their Topps baseball card. Since Munson's 1970 Topps rookie card did not include a facsimile autograph, some of these five signatures were most likely used for one of Munson's future 1970s Topps cards.
As you can see, each signature is neatly scripted within their designated text box, with Thurman obviously taking this task very seriously by providing his finest penmanship.
