(LOT 36)
1933 Goudey #149 Babe Ruth PSA 4 VG-EX

It's no secret that the pricing points for #149 Goudey Ruth subjects have surged like an uncontrollable tsunami, justified by several sales for PSA 8 examples exceeding the $500k mark! The prestigious Goudey Gum Company issued their landmark set the season after Ruth's iconic "Called-Shot" in Game #3 of the 1932 World Series. The 1933 campaign would mark Ruth's 20th big-league season, with Ruth eclipsing the .300 batting mark (.301) for the 17th and final time of his unparalleled career. His 34 home runs and 114 runs batted in would also represent the last time this colossal slugger would breach the 30+ homer/100+ RBI marks, ending his remarkable 22-year MLB tenure two years later with the Boston Braves. One of the critical aspects of the #149 Goudey Ruth is the imposing half-body swinging pose originally struck by none other than illustrious photographer Charles M. Conlon.

It's this pose that also graces two other Ruth Goudey subjects (#s 53 & 144), and the Babe's majestic swinging image is a testament to his immortality as he watches another mighty wallop sail towards the grandstands. Presented here is a super eye pleasing PSA 4 VG-EX example of the highly coveted #149 Goudey Ruth that has eluded any serious surface flaws. The rich red background is a perfect backdrop for the iconic Ruthian batting pose, with even corner wear and some diminutive soiling situated near the verso's upper right corner the primary culprits for the assessment. While the timeless image depicts splendid side-to-side positioning, it does favor the lower edge between four toned borders. A stellar mid-grade Ruth Goudey offering, several other PSA 4 specimens have fetched $34k and $32k at 2022 public auctions, more than substantiating its regal standing!
