(LOT 1306)
1958 Chicago Sun-Times Original 8" x 10" Type 1 Stan Musial 3,000th Hit Photograph - PSA Encapsulated

Much to the dismay of St. Louis Cardinals manager Fred Hutchinson, and most certainly fans in St. Louis, Stan Musial, sitting on 2,999 hits was called to pinch hit in the top of the sixth inning at Wrigley Field with one man on. Hutchinson sat Musial in this 22nd game of the season so that the future Hall of Famer could potentially notch his 3,000th career hit in front of a hometown crowd on the following day. Sunning himself along the first base line, Musial was then hailed to pinch hit with the Cards down 3-1 in the sixth. Sitting 2-2, Stan lined a double into the left field corner for his 3,000th hit. He was then mobbed at the pitcher's mound by photographers and well-wishers as the game was uncharacteristically paused and fewer than 6,000 fans stood to honor The Man.

Offered here is an original 8" x 10" Type 1 photographs from the Chicago Sun-Times commemorating the monumental occasion. Stan Musial was the eighth player in Major League history to collect 3,000 base knocks, and this PSA encapsulated image catches him kissing his tool of the trade in the clubhouse following the game. The borderless photograph remains in great condition with moderate edge and corner wear. On the reverse here rests a Chicago Sun-Times photo caption designation dated "5/13/58", a pair of small newspaper clippings and two additional date stamps and pencil notation. This 64-year-old photo of The Man is a testament to his place in baseball lore as the eighth of now 33 players to reach the heralded number.
