(LOT 1284)
1941 Original 4-1/2" x 9" Associated Press St. Louis Cardinals Type 1 Team News Service Photo - PSA Encapsulated

In 1941, the St. Louis Cardinals finished second in the National League behind the Brooklyn Dodgers who won their first pennant in 21 years. Despite winning 97 games, Brooklyn edged the Redbirds to earn a trip to the World Series against the New York Yankees. This would be a changing of the guard year for the Cards, as Hall of Famers Johnny Mize and Enos Slaughter welcomed newcomer Stan Musial to the lineup. WWII would take its toll on the St. Louis lineup for the next few years, but Musial went on to become the greatest Cardinal of all time. Offered is an original Type 1 photo of the 1941 St. Louis team which includes the 20-year-old Musial ready for action. This borderless 4-1/2" x 9" photograph remains in excellent condition with no obstructions on the surface of the image and only the slightest of wear at the left edge. The back is still bright white with a portion of a paper caption present as well as the "ASSOCIATED PRESS PHOTO" stamping and a date stamp of "SEP 21 1941". Light toning and a small smudge are visible. Based on the date stamp, the Redbirds swept a doubleheader on this day against the Chicago Cubs, outscoring them 13-5.
