(LOT 1278)
1937 Lou Gehrig Plays in 1,900 Consecutive Games PSA Type 1 Encapsulated International News Photo - Measures Approx. 6-1/2" x 8-1/2"

On August 3, 1937, Lou Gehrig would play in his 1,900th consecutive game in a doubleheader played at Yankee Stadium against the Chicago White Sox. The Yankees would sweep the Sox both games, with Gehrig belting a long 3-run homer in the first game to lead the Bronx Bombers to a 7-2 victory. Of course, Gehrig would eventually tallying an inconceivable 2,130 consecutive games, with his iconic streak ultimately ending on May 2, 1939 in Detroit due to the ill effects of the deadly ALS disease that claimed Gehrig's life on June 2, 1941. Regarding the 1937 campaign, Gehrig would once again post "MVP Worthy" numbers by belting 37 round-trippers, knocking in 158 runs, while compiling an incredible .351 batting average and 1.116 OPS. That hitting performance would go on to help the Yankees cruise to their 9th pennant, posting a 102-52 record and besting 2nd place Detroit by a staggering 13 games. They would continue their onslaught by besting their cross-town Giants rivals in five games in the Fall Classic, posting their second consecutive and sixth overall championship. This sensational 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" PSA Type 1 offering reveals Gehrig accepting an award on August 3, 1937 for playing in his 1,900th consecutive game, with the International News credit stamp affixed to the verso. Save some modest black surface marks along Gehrig's forearm and in the upper right quadrant, the super contrasted image has eluded any serious blemishes, defying 85 years to retain many of its original sparkling attributes!
